To Have and Have Not

On a fishing trip in , director Howard Hawks told Hemingway as much. You need money, you know. If I make three dollars in a picture, you get one of them. I can make a picture out of your worst story. All you have to do is make a story about how they met. No man alone now. Moreover, since they stand on their own and are told in third- and first-person narration, respectively, they awkwardly stand out from the larger, final third of the book.

To Have and Have Not is the dramatic, brutal story of Harry Morgan, an honest boat owner who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat. His adventures lead him into the world of the wealthy and dissipated yachtsmen who swarm the region, and involve him in a strange and unlikely love affair. In turn funny and tragic, lively and poetic, remarkable in its emotional impact, To Have and Have Not takes literary high adventure to a new level. Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in He died in

Published by Penguin rpt. A paperback book. Daily shipping. From: Mr. Price Mansfield, United Kingdom.

Long criticized for its fragmented form, its ham-fisted approach to politics, and its hard-boiled obsession with cojones, this blistering tale of a Florida Straits boat captain named Harry Morgan desperately trying to survive the economic ravages of the Great Depression by running rum and revolutionaries to Havana has fueled tourist industries in Key West and Cuba and has inspired at least three movie adaptations including a classic cowritten by William Faulkner and starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Most important, he reminds us what a very different novel To Have and Have Not would have been had Hemingway not undergone a political change of heart while covering the Spanish Civil War and revised a narrative originally feral in its suspicion of partisans and ideologues at odds with the newfound ideals of activism and intervention that Hemingway felt essential to halting the global rise of fascism.

To Have and Have Not is the dramatic, brutal story of Harry Morgan, an honest boat owner who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat., The novel depicts Harry as an ordinary working man of the Depression Era , forced by dire economic forces into the black-market activity of running contraband between Cuba and Florida. A wealthy fishing charter customer one of the "Have's" bilks Harry by slipping away without paying after a three-week fishing trip, leaving Harry destitute.

Crisp, effortless prose. Oddly erratic plot, the Harry Morgan thread and the Richard Gordon thread really don't have anything to do with each other. The Richard Gordon part feels strongly Hemingway is the ultimate manipulator. He gets a lot of flack for his straightforward writing but I have found myself enjoying it. It doesn't always take flowery language to make a scene or a character. Ernest Hemingway did more to influence the style of English prose than any other writer of his time.
