Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman is possibly the most recognizable comic book character to this day. The sales of comic books increased markedly during World War II. They were cheap, portable and had inspirational, patriotic stories of good triumphing over evil. The tales very much reflected the events and values of the time. Science fiction and Western-themed comics were some of the new styles of story-telling that started to appear. The teen genre was also gaining interest.

Comics have a long and storied history of characters communicating directly with the reader in unique and clever ways. During the Silver Age, comics were a lot less serious about keeping continuity in its place, and no series showed that quite like Superman. The Brave And The Bold featured the Dark Knight teaming up with a variety of characters from across the DC universe, but one of the absolute strangest tales came in issue Rock and the duo were busting a terrorist group smuggling high-tech rifles. The chrome-domed peeping tom who hangs out on the Moon typically keeps his commentary to the denizens of the Marvel universe, but in the introductions to issues of What If?
