Tom Stoppard was catapulted into the front ranks of modem playwrights overnight when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead opened in London in Its subsequent run in New York brought it the same enthusiastic acclaim, and the play has since been performed numerous times in the major theatrical centers of the world. It is, after all, the most performed, most studied, most earnestly analyzed and strenuously anatomized of all Mr. Stoppard mixed the poetic melodrama of Shakespeare with the doom-laden minimalism of Samuel Beckett and topped it with the slapstick of the Marx Brothers. Very brilliant. Very chilling. It has the dust of thought about it and the particles glitter excitingly in the theatrical air.
This was another charming variation on a Shakespearean theme, a dissonant song cycle extending out from familiar material. One rife with pauses and silence. Beckett in Elsinore. I did not think this My sisters and I were kind of obsessed with this play and movie when we were younger.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead , often referred to as just Rosencrantz and Guildenstern , is an absurdist , existential tragicomedy by Tom Stoppard , first staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in The main setting is Denmark. The action of Stoppard's play takes place mainly "in the wings" of Shakespeare's, with brief appearances of major characters from Hamlet who enact fragments of the original's scenes. Between these episodes the two protagonists voice their confusion at the progress of events occurring onstage without them in Hamlet , of which they have no direct knowledge. Comparisons have also been drawn with Samuel Beckett 's Waiting for Godot ,  for the presence of two central characters who almost appear to be two halves of a single character.

It expands upon the stories of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern , two minor characters from William Shakespeare 's Hamlet. In this play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are the main protagonists and Hamlet is the bit player, thus making it the inverse of the original play. The action of the play focuses on the misadventures of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern while they were offstage in Shakespeare's version, except for a few scenes in which the dramatic actions of the plays coincide. In these scenes, Shakespeare's script is used by Stoppard verbatim.
