one man and his dog book

No Better Friend by Robert Weintraub | Waterstones

An extraordinary tale of the remarkable bond between one man and his dog during the Second World War. The two friends huddled close together, each of them the other's saving grace in a world gone to hell. There was nothing terribly unusual about POWs suffering horribly at the hands of their Japanese captors. All across the Pacific theatre, Allied captives were experiencing similar punishment. But there was one thing unusual about this particular duo of prisoners.

One Man and his Dog. Anthony Richardson. This is the first book written about Jan Vaclav Bozdech and his dog Antis, who was the first non-British dog to be awarded the Dicken Medal — the animal equivalent of the VC. He was shot down over Germany, and whilst struggling to find his way back to the French line found an abandoned Alsatian puppy who was to share his life for the next 13 years. On arrival in England, Jan joined the RAF as an air-gunner firstly posted to Czech Fighter Squadron, later transferring to Czech Bomber Squadron where Antis took to accompanying the crew on their bombing missions. Jan returned, with Antis, to a post in the Czechoslovak Ministry of National Defence at the end of the war.

A thought-provoking and heart-warming story of how one man and his working dogs is giving rural kids, on their last chance, a second chance. As a kid, Bernie Shakeshaft's mischievous and reckless behaviour led him to became known as the wild one of his devout Catholic family. It isn't surprising that his path led him to the Northern Territory, a place where people often go to either lose themselves or find themselves. Bernie, a searcher for his purpose in life, found himself. He had many jobs, firstly as a ringer on a cattle station owned by the Packer family, and later as a dingo trapper for the Parks and Wildlife Service.
