Plant growth hormone--

Commercial Applications of PGRs — Thought for Food?

Science Alert. Asian Journal of Plant Sciences. Year: Volume: 9 Issue: 4 Page No. Mohamed Amanullah , S. Sekar and S. Abstract: Plant growth regulators are chemical substances and when applied in small amounts, they bring rapid changes in the phenotypes of the plant and also influence the plant growth, right from seed germination to senescence either by enhancing or by stimulating the natural growth regulatory system. Plant growth substances are known to enhance the source-sink relationship and stimulate the translocation of photo-assimilates thereby helping in effective flower formation, fruit and seed development and ultimately enhance the productivity of crops.

Plant growth regulators PGRs have been an important component in agricultural production even prior to the identification of plant hormones. For example, in order to synchronize flowering in mango or in pineapple, fires were lit adjacent to fields 43 in which these crops were grown. The ethylene generated as a result of incomplete combustion stimulated flowering, although this explanation was not understood at the time. Heat treatment of lemons was also used to stimulate ripening and degreening 12 , the ethylene generated from inefficient heating units again promoting the ripening process. PGRs are now used on over one million hectares worldwide on a diversity of crops each year

Plant Growth Regulators. A hormone is a naturally produced chemical synthesized in one part of the plant and then travels to another part where it effects growth.

These metrics are regularly updated to reflect usage leading up to the last few days. Citations are the number of other articles citing this article, calculated by Crossref and updated daily. Find more information about Crossref citation counts. Since the 's, natural and synthetic plant growth regulators have been used with increasing incidence to modify crop plants by changing the rate or pattern, or both, of their responses to the internal and external factors that govern development from germination through vegetative growth, reproductive development, maturity, senescence or aging, and postharvest preservation. This review deals with the history of plant growth regulators, regulation of plant metabolism, control of flowering, effects on fruit set and development, control of abscission, control of plant and organ size, recently developed plant growth regulators, and the perceived future for these compounds as related to agricultural needs and economics, the strategies for future searches for effective compounds, and the influence of regulatory issues on the development and availability of these compounds.
