Fasting is a willingness to separate yourself from the things of this world and put your focus solely on the Lord. It has been a powerful spiritual tool used by Christians and ministry leaders the world over and was modeled in biblical contexts throughout Scripture in times of trial, in seeking divine direction, and for deliverance from sin and evil. The spiritual benefits and rewards of fasting are clear. But not only does it open the door to greater revelation through the Holy Spirit, our bodies are actually designed to live a fasted lifestyle. The rewards of fasting are what beckon us to embark on a biblical fast. There are times when simply pressing into God through more time in His Word and in prayer will reopen the flow of the supernatural in your life. But, at other times, you need something more—a time dedicated wholly to Him. A common question many have when it comes to fasting is: When should you fast? In Isaiah 58 , God explains some of the reasons for biblical fasting, and others are modeled throughout the Bible, as well.

D iscernment M inistries I nternational. In the past, as a charismatic extremist we were taught a great deal about fasting and we used to fast for considerable periods of time. Sadly most of our efforts were unrewarded. Even though we were involved in an activity which is deeply rooted in the Scripture, our motives for fasting were incorrect and the goals we were seeking were not those that our Lord would have had us seek after. Most books on the subject of fasting deal with fasting as a means to gain spiritual power aka an increased anointing or as a means to seek the other 8 sign-gifts the Apostle Paul mentioned in First Corinthians Ronnie Floyd.

The fast God is talking about here has very little to do with simply going without food. This fast is a lifestyle. I will not partake of the things of the world that have kept me bound. It will heal you. It will cause the light of God to shine from your life. It will cause the glory of God to be your total covering!
