Is there anything better than a Victorian crime story? This was the era that saw the rise of both the detective novel and serious media interest in crime—the more gruesome, the better. Hopefully this will change soon. It would be great to read about this wide-ranging topic from a non-white perspective! Boy, did Victorians love crime.
T his is the time of the year to curl up beside the fire with an engrossing novel. Three of my novels, The Quincunx, The Unburied and my latest, Rustication, happen wholly or partly over Christmas and show the darker — even menacing — side of family and friendship.
