Our culture seems to promote love over friendship. Although each culture has its own sayings and proverbs underlining the importance of friendship, it is generally considered as something less mature and inferior to marriage or its less official equivalent which is supposed to be the only relationship that really matters. At best, intense friendships are something we are expected to grow out of. The novels I recommend reflect on friendship in an astute mature way, giving us a lot of insight into its nature and significance. On the surface the selected books might seem similar, yet the styles, tone and stories are totally different. The novel follows a group of brilliant teenagers who bond at an arts summer camp in upstate New York in up through their adulthood.

These novels struck a chord with me, but reading about these things happening to someone else gave me a sense of control as well.

McCullers gives a voice to those who have been rejected and forgotten; her novel will have you rethink the concepts of love, death, and friendship. Also, you'll be relieved to have a reading buddy by your side when you're being blown away by the author's beautiful, philosophical writing. Keep in mind she was only 23 years old when this book was published.
