Philip José Farmer, rebel against reality | Books | The Guardian

It's difficult to say exactly what constitutes the essential Riverworld series. I started reading it when only the first two books of a projected trilogy existed: To Your Scattered It worked so well that the American author worked the same features into his novels and stories forever after. One of his noteworthy early stories was "Open to Me, My Sister", whose title gives an idea why it was considered "disgusting" by potential publishers. Not that Farmer's tales all strike the same note.

A tiresome performance by two genre talents who surely can do better, this is the old space opera story whereby a brave individual from earth manages to outwit an entire race of superior beings, get the girl and save the galaxy.

Most of them seem to ride my subway line. On Saturday night we all seem to go out to the movies together. So I naturally gravitated to the underlying concept of Dayworld, which is set in a dystopian future Earth so overpopulated that the ruling body has taken drastic measures. The citizenry of the world has been divided into seven groups. Each group is allowed to be awake only one day out of the week. The Mondays never meet the Thursdays.

What if, a few years from now, she could easily see, and even define, the distinction between reality and unreality on the screen, but deep down in her there was a child that still could not distinguish? Some of his best includes entire series, which clearly could not form part of this single book collection, although the Riverworld is represented here.

Along with contemporaries including Robert Heinlen, Isaac Asimov, Philip K Dick and Kurt Vonnegut, Farmer dedicated his life to writing stories that forced their readers to confront and question many of their most basic assumptions about life, the world, and that slippery beast called "reality". Given the incredible social and political conformism of the times Farmer wrote in, it seems amazing that he and his fellow revolutionaries were given almost unfettered access to a generation of young minds. The America of the s and 50s was a time and place consumed by cold war politics, and busying itself with the construction of the military-industrial-complex and consumer culture that would have such joyous outcomes for so many of us today. And yet from this climate of self-censorship emerged one of the most subversive, anarchic and often filthy literary movements of the 20th century. Perhaps because they were born in the pages of the pulps, and clothed as meaningless entertainment for the masses, science fiction stories were publicly available in every drugstore across the continent despite being crammed full of ideas that most self respecting Christian conservative Americans would have died before exposing their children to. Farmer made an early name for himself with his story The Lovers, a rather unsettling tale of one man's romantic affair with a parasitic alien entity that has taken the form of a human female.
