The Reader's Digest Condensed Books were a series of hardcover anthology collections, published by the American general interest monthly family magazine Reader's Digest and distributed by direct mail. Most volumes contained five although a considerable minority consisted of three, four, or six current best-selling novels and nonfiction books which were abridged or "condensed" specifically for Reader's Digest. The series was popular; a New York Times article estimated annual sales of 10 million copies. For most of their publication schedule, the volumes were issued four times each year, except for , the year of its launch. The rate of publication gradually increased to a bi-monthly schedule by the earlys.

Some years ago, while reporting on the annual general meeting of the Writers Union of Canada, I met a gentleman of advanced years and amiable disposition, with whom it was a pleasure to converse. I was thrilled to discover he was Fred Bodsworth. My mother was a loyal life-long member of this club, which collected condensed versions of a nonfiction book, two novels, and one humorous book into a single or page volume each quarter. At one point, to bolster the impression of literacy, the exterior of the volumes were clad in faux leather. This may be going too far.
