## 'The Greedy Triangle' Teaches Kids About Geometry

This sample lesson plan uses the book "The Greedy Triangle" to teach about the attributes of two-dimensional figures. The only supplies needed are:. Have students imagine that they are triangles and then ask them several questions. What would be fun? What would be frustrating? If you were a triangle, what would you do and where would you go? Have students write an answer to this prompt: What shape would you like to be and why?

## Teaching The Greedy Triangle

Polygon Shape up! This activity is based on the picture book: The Greedy Triangle. Summary: A triangle engages the services of the local shape-shifter when he becomes bored. After several visits and gaining angles and sides he explores the pros and cons of being a quadrilateral and several different polygons. Finally he happily returns to his life as a triangle, sure that 3 angles and 3 sides is the best thing for him to be. Lynn Sherman is a teacher candidate at York University in Toronto, Ontario, where she recently taught a geometry class based on The Greedy Triangle, by Marilyn Burns Scholastic, , to a class of second graders. In The Greedy Triangle, the Triangle character is dissatisfied with its shape and decides, through the help of the Shapeshifter, to take on some new identities. By continuing to add one more side to itself, it changes from a triangle, to a quadrilateral, to a pentagon, and more. For the prop I used eight strips of cardboard. Teachers can add as many strips as they like; however, I wanted to go only as far as an octagon. The strips were approximately 6 inches long by 1 inch wide. I punched a hole at each end of the strips and, with seven fasteners, strung the eight strips together, end-to-end.

The Greedy Triangle , by Marilyn Burns, is a great way to introduce shapes to young kids. It explores various shapes and gives copious examples of shapes in the world around us, and gave us a great starting place for exploring triangles! Or as Dr. Seuss put it,. Read our full disclosure policy here. The Greedy Triangle.

This is a smart notebook lesson that uses the book, The Greedy Triangle, to introduce students to the different polygons. You can use to book as a read aloud .

Picture books have long been a favorite way of introducing mathematical concepts in my class. Mathematical concepts grow throughout the grades, and perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in geometry, when the concept of shape starts before students even enter school. Marilyn Burns, mathematician and author extraordinaire, captures a simple idea of adding sides to a triangle in The Greedy Triangle but this one picture book can support learning throughout the grades. Identify and describe shapes squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres. Note: 3-D shapes are not in The Greedy Triangle.

This is one of my favorite lessons, okay one of many of my favorite lessons and was originally created by my teammate, Cathy Mooney. But as good teachers, we always borrow ideas and lessons and tweak them for our own when we see good ones! This lesson will integrate literature, writing, math and art in one final student created book - which goes into the students portfolio of work summative assessment. It also supports the 5th grade Common Core Standards where students need to understand attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. He's not satisfied, and his journey continues from the three sided, three angled shape of the triangle all the way to a dodecagon, 12 sides and 12 angles. Literature, and this book in this case, gives me an excellent opportunity to support student conversations wherein they refine their mathematical communication skills, by using clear and precise mathematical language in their discussion MP3. The book also leads to wonderful discussion about self-esteem and accepting who you are, a theme that we identify and discuss 5.
