A great big list of chapter books to read aloud , with titles suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years of age. This post shares 50 great chapter book read alouds from that survey, with titles that are suitable from children age around 6 years of age through to 12 years of age. I love that these are books that have been actually recommended by parents and teachers. With a voracious 10 year old reader in our home I completely understand but I would encourage you to consider continuing to read aloud together when you have the opportunity. Put simply, because books are full of words!

But finding early chapter books with bold leading ladies can be surprisingly difficult. Franny is a mad scientist who conducts experiments in her attic bedroom. Though her experiments often get her into trouble, she always manages to fix the problems she creates. With illustrations on every page and simple, entertaining text, this series is perfect for kids that like things a little creepy. Bad guys, bullies, and surviving on a nearly deserted island make this book a fun adventure for young readers.

Why should kids read series? I know my kids start to think of favorite characters as friends. That encourages reading because when you have a friend you want to read all about her further adventures! So, be prepared to bring home stacks of books home from the library. They are best for children who have moved past easy readers , but are not yet ready for what are generally known as middle grade novels. Please note: Book titles and covers are affiliate links. Since we are so close to summer vacation I thought it might be nice to put together a list of chapter book recommendations for those of you with little girls. Obviously many of these books will certainly work for boys too. I have a 6 year old emerging reader and a 7 year old reader and the difference between the two is so dramatic. My second grader on the other hand, has struggled with reading and we have had an uphill battle with her reading until the end of First Grade when she started reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in class. That book started to turn a corner for her as she was really excited for reading time each day and would rush home to tell me what happened to Charlie. In the summer between 1st and 2nd grade we took a trip to Universal Studios, Florida and started reading the Harry Potter series. That has really made a profound difference for her as she absolutely loves the books!

As I have shared previously, my eldest loves a good dose of humour in her books. This started out with picture books and has continued as she moves into chapter books and novels. Today I am sharing a list of funny books she has loved so far which I will continue to add to over time. While most of these books fit into the popular illustrated humour market, they are not all graphic novels — the content varies in terms of the ratio of illustration to text and the complexity of text to storyline. What they do all have is relatable characters, lots of family, friend and school references that readers will also relate to often shared with more than a little cheekiness , and lots to laugh about. While some of them are most definitely suitable for younger independent readers, I think you will find many of them are still enjoyed by children in the later years of primary or grade school.
