Let's Speak Vietnamese : An Introduction to Contemporary Vietnamese
The Westminster School District pulled the textbook and workbook from a classroom this week because of concerns by some in the Little Saigon community that certain sections have pro-Communist wording. The book and textbook were being used in a nine-week pilot program, which teaches the Vietnamese language at Warner Middle School, that ends next week. But the book and workbook will be replaced. We decided if it was causing this kind of a problem, we would pull it. The decision to remove the book and corresponding workbook from the seventh- and eighth-grade class was made Tuesday by Superintendent Marian Kim Phelps after meeting with Westminster Mayor Tri Ta, who has a child in the class. The district, Montgomery said, will now form a committee to review alternative materials to use during the language course in the fall. Ta and his wife, Anh Doan, who first contacted the district, have agreed to be on the committee.

Still, while a number of members appear to be actively studying the language, there are actually only a handful of threads which are devoted specifically to this language, none of which offers a list of resources. In addition, Vietnam is an official member of the Francophonie with a significant portion of the population possessing French as a second language. Although Russian, Czech, German, and Polish are also spoken by small sections of the Vietnamese population, English is increasingly becoming the favored second language. It is the native language of the Vietnamese Kinh people, as well as a first or second language for the many ethnic minorities of Vietnam. As a result of Vietnamese emigration and cultural influence, Vietnamese speakers are found throughout the world, notably in East and Southeast Asia, North America, Australia and Western Europe. Vietnamese has also been officially recognized as a minority language in the Czech Republic.
