Book Cover Design Mastery: The Only Guide You'll Need

Some authors think about the way their finished product might look long before their book is finished, while others will not think about it until it becomes absolutely necessary. Whatever your starting point, this article will give you the resources necessary to get your book noticed, bought, and read. Book design includes not only the graphic design of the front and back cover, but also the layout and typographic design of every page within your book. To ensure that your book will conform to the industry standards of professional book design, take a look at the articles I have linked below. Authors who design their own covers often run into trouble because their close connection to their books lead to covers that confuse readers rather than invite them.

How to format a book for print in MS Word: a step by step tutorial to book design

We all know the unspoken rule is you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Indeed, in terms of design thinking, there's a hell of a lot more to.

Scribe Guide to Designing Your Book Layout

Writing a book is no easy task, but designing it can seem even more daunting. By formatting the interior, conceptualizing a cover, and hiring a graphic designer, you can design a professional and eye-catching book in no time. To design the interior of a book, start with a table of contents, followed by a blank page. Then, have page 1 be the right-hand page after the blank page. Number all of the pages in your book, starting with the first page of the first chapter, and center the numbers at the bottom of each page. When you're choosing a font, go with a serif-less font since they print better, and make it point.

As with any creative project, there are no hard and fast rules for designing a book, but there are a few basic principles that designers adhere to. Again though, such rules are often there to be broken: legibility seems like an obvious one, but with more conceptual art books, for instance, sometimes you can get away with type and layout that challenge the reader to look as much as to read; images can be layered and morphed and chopped and screwed around with; stories can be told in traditional, linear formats, or as post-modern, nonlinear modes of expression. It may still be nourishing, but my appetite is gone.

As a self-published author, he was selling just 15 books per month. He changed his book cover design for the first book in his three-part series…and his sales of all three books tripled! Two months later, he changed the covers of the second and third books to match the first in quality, and his sales doubled again. Your book cover should send a clear message. In general, nonfiction speaks to the brain while fiction speaks to the heart. Novel book covers do great when they send an emotional message congruent with the story, while nonfiction book covers that are witty and intriguing sell well. When you browse the Amazon bestsellers in your genre, you should notice patterns in color schemes, fonts, layouts, and images.

Increase the Number of Pages to 2 and deselect Facing Pages. From the Page Size menu choose Custom. Name the custom size Paperback Book and set the Width to mm and Height to mm. Despite how simple it seems or perhaps because of it , book layout is one of the major factors that separates amateurish books from professional ones. I will describe how to design both print and ebook, because they are very different formats, and must be done differently.
