Picture Books for Beginners - How to Make a Childrens Book

So you've almost finished writing that book or perhaps you've already finished and now you're starting to think about getting it published.

Getting Published for Authors and Illustrators

Don't worry if you don't yet have a story idea — it's likely you'll be inspired as you complete the course! What is it that makes popular picture books so magical? How do you really know what appeals to children? Writing a picture book that publishers want is an art. But there are clear guidelines you can follow. You'll unlock a module full of lessons each week and complete a small assignment due each Sunday night — plus receive direct feedback from your online tutor — an expert in the world of picture books. Understanding the format will help you understand the kinds of topics children are interested in, the word length and the pace of your story.

Writing Picture Books

When I was nine, for the briefest of moments, Australian author Jackie French was my pen pal. The first letter was sent off with low expectations; at best I was hoping for a signed mass printout response. So when a few weeks later a small envelope containing a handwritten letter arrived at my house — complete with a drawing of a wombat — I was first surprised, then happy, then got out my notepad to write back. It turned out that authors were real people, with real lives after all. A couple of weeks later another small envelope arrived in the mail. The books that children read become part of them in the way that books they read as adults are very, very rarely going to do.
