Custom Foil Stamping for your Book CoverAlthough most indie authors produce ebooks and print on demand paperbacks, more and more are finding a use for hardbound books. These cases are usually foiled and stamped, especially the cloth cases. This part of the book production uses technology that dates directly back to the invention of letterpresses, the earliest type of printing equipment. This is also one reason that print on demand vendors can offer hardcover books with dust jackets, but not foiling or stamping. It requires the use of a letterpress of some kind to hit the cloth or paper with a specially made metal die. Want more information on creating print books of lasting beauty, ones your readers will love? This same equipment is used for both stamping and embossing jackets, paper covers, and cloth or paper cases.
I've been investigating ways to put computer-generated art and lettering on books, primarily to imitate gold stamping. The method shown here is very much a work in progress, but I'm satisfied that the results are good enough for my projects. So far I've only put titles on cloth-bound books, but experiments with leather, as shown below, look promising. I won't discuss all the methods I've investigated here because most readers will want to get on with finishing their books. For those who want to go deeper and hopefully improve this process, I've written up a discussion of alternatives. This technique is based on what I learned from reading and practicing the methods published by Frank Miller at Pulsar for his DecalPro product.

WHAT IS BOOK COVER EMBOSSING?
Nothing says "professional" like foil stamping, but what exactly is it? Foil stamping is the application of metallic foil to paper using a heated die., Hi everyone, I'm working on a project- making a DIY book cover. I've figured out how to assemble the book already but the cover baffles me.
