The South African actor John Kani has become something of a legend since he first teamed up with Athol Fugard back in Kani uses the old-fashioned form of a generation-gap family drama to explore his themes. The play focuses on the simmering conflict taking place in South Africa between exiles who left to struggle against apartheid from outside the country and those who soldiered on quietly at home, enduring hardship and oppression while patiently waiting for liberation. The reckoning takes a poignantly unresolved form here. The problem: Themba has died, and Sipho will have to make his peace with a ghost. She grew up in England surrounded by South African exiles, hearing tales of the homeland. Mandisa tends to trample on the sensitivities of her stern uncle, who is aghast at her lack of respect for traditional mourning.
