The 9 Arts of Spiritual Conversations — Walking alongside people who believe differently. So many times when I am places in public or around people I can be an introvert. Those of you that know me very closely may not necessarily see that because when I become comfortable with people, I will open up and talk to them. I think many people are that exact same way — especially when it comes to talking about God, the Bible, Jesus, etc. I find that this book very effectively addresses my issues in my opening sentences. I received a copy of this book from Tyndale for me to do a review on it. In full disclosure, I was not required or requested by Tyndale to write a positive review.
We love the big stuff: the grandiose Olympic opening ceremony; the game-winning, last-second shot to win the championship; the glamorous, opulent royal wedding. We eat it up. We carry this perspective into our approach to evangelism. In order to reach church outsiders intentionally today, we may have to consider a new perspective. What if we focused on the little things instead?
Like many churches, our church has been exploring different ways to evangelize. We adopted the Alpha course last fall with amazing results thus far. A key component of the Alpha course is small group leaders who listen rather than teach. I am more and more convinced that listening is the most effective avenue to successful evangelism in our modern society, and the success of Alpha all around the world is testimony to that. People will not be convinced by logical arguments. They need to know that we care about them and are willing to listen to their thoughts and experiences without imposing our own.
