On our reading list: The Icarus Deception by Seth Godin
How High Will You Fly? Customer Reviews Most helpful customer reviews 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book. Jeremy I purchased this book as the textbook for a senior-level mathematics coursein my undergrad. How ever, this.
In The Icarus Deception , Seth Godin's most inspiring book, he challenges readers to find the courage to treat their work as a form of art. Everyone knows that Icarus's father made him wings and told him not to fly too close to the sun; he ignored the warning and plunged to his doom. The lesson: Play it safe. Listen to the experts. It was the perfect propaganda for the industrial economy. What boss wouldn't want employees to believe that obedience and conformity are the keys to success? But we tend to forget that Icarus was also warned not to fly too low, because seawater would ruin the lift in his wings.
Icarus is a mythological character with incredible staying power. But Godin asks: why should our most valuable skill be our ability to follow orders? In The Icarus Deception , Godin calls for us to think and act boldly. After the jump, watch four great talks from Godin, on topics ranging from education to mass media. Despite the old saying, when sliced bread arrived on the market, it went unnoticed for years. In this talk from TED, Godin shares what it is that makes some ideas get attention while many others — often good ones — fail to get noticed.

I could sit here and rant on and on about the meaning and implications of this book. Or I could let Seth speak for himself. That moment has now passed. Ok, best to put away the turtle shell, no more hiding from the world. Is your dream being fueled by all the propaganda?
