This is a record of all the valid book recommendations I received before, during and in the year after my quest. I chose one book for each nation for the project. These are underlined and you can click the titles or country names to read my thoughts on each choice. I continue to update the list by choosing one new title a month as my Book of the month. I love that books can transport us; even without leaving home. Though this is a rather ambitious reading goal, I wanted to capture what this world reading challenge would look like — and give it a shot regardless! After endless research, I created the following world reading challenge. It includes 52 titles from around the globe — along with alternatives for those books you might have already read. How long would it take you to read every book in the world? Here are some facts to help you estimate!

As pieces of material culture, each is a fascinating account of how one man related to, used and was changed by books. This almost obsessive activity makes what now remains of his library — the Biblioteca Colombina, housed in a wing of Seville Cathedral — an incredibly important material resource to explore book history, travel and intellectual networks. And a material problem of how to store things very quickly turns into an intellectual problem of which things belong together. It forces certain decisions. To create this, he set a team of sumistas — digesters of the thousands of books in the library — to work distilling each volume, leading towards his ultimate vision that all the knowledge in the world could be boiled down into just a few volumes: one for medicine, one for grammar, and so on. Another was a blueprint for the Library using ten thousand scraps of paper bearing hieroglyphic symbols.

B ooks, books, books. They will give you fuller, thicker hair. Job satisfaction comes and goes, partners enrapture and abscond, but you can always fall back on the timeless ability of literature to transport you to a different world. They simultaneously speak to the heart and mind. They teach you about the history of our world, the possibilities of our future and the fabric of our souls. So where do you start? The power structures at play for centuries have meant that a very narrow band of people have been given the opportunity to say something universal about the human condition.
